Why do surfboarders wear boardies? Won't the wind catch the excess fabric and affect their balance and speed? It was summer 1980 when I 1st saw them mentioned in newspaper fashion pages and department store ads in Pennsylvania, U. S. of A. The implication was that they came from California, where there wer more waves to surfboard on.
I don't know. I have a picture dating from the 60s of surfers in Australia, who were wearing a mixture of briefs and what would today be described as squarecuts. I'll post it shortly. I suspect that the US has favoured boardies over speedos because of a sort of puritanism. Have a look at this piece:
